Working in the Springfield Storeroom (Again!) - Two Times This Year

August 

      We drove to Springfield and went to our storeroom to see the possible damage by the break-in last February.  When the lady had called about it, Joan said, “Well, we’ve been wanting to downsize, maybe this will do it for us.”  [Ron did not think that was funny.]  Keenan had checked it out and found nothing had been taken (are we insulted?)

     We stayed in a nice Airbnb for a week where we could unload the entire van so we had room to take things to the post office to mail home, to a thrift shop, or trash.

     We stayed again in October in another Airbnb to work more in the storage unit.

We gave away three antique furniture pieces – no room even in Seattle for them – to Joseph, a young airman who remodels older home for his airbnb’s , and where we have stayed before (see BLOG for 8/22/16).

The storeroom when we left in October,  We hope we all see a difference.

We mailed 20 boxes of photos home - they had still been stored in Keenan's basement.  (We have only two tubs left).

Delta Diner – Finally Found It

   For years, we have heard about the Delta Diner and how great it was, but we could never find it (searched prior to the iPhone GPS ownership.)  But we were determined this year and so we went with Nora – who lives here! – so of course she knew where it was.  You should checkout its website and menu options. ‘’ Lets just say, Very Unusual,  But still, very good!  And very fun.

On the way back, we stopped at this beautiful lake.

Walking in the Woods: Chipwa Landing Road

Today we went to Ron’s favorite walking road: Chipwa Landing.  It goes down to the Chipwa Lake, exactly one mile from the crossroad to the lake. 

  

You can see that the trees have lost some leaves, although there are more evergreeens along this road.

But see the difference from Sept 19.

Joan's knee began to hurt, so she turned back.  Ron speeded up and went to the end of the road and then overtook her on the way back (see him up ahead!)  She kept on but then he got to the van aand drove back to pick her up. (Despite that she walked 2.4 miles today.)

Fun Time at a Small Eatery

    We again met up with good friends Dick and Sharon in the Telemark office this morning and arranged to go to the Rivers Eatery tonight for a fund-raiser for the [tiny] Cable Namakagon Historical Museum.  It was so fun to see them again.  The place was swamped – so we saw other friends there too.  Normally they are closed Tuesdays but opened just for this.  Quite unbelievable that a small restaurant in a tiny town would have such an enthusiastic crowd! (https://theidealmarket.com.  Stone oven baked pizzas with all fresh ingredients.)

 There was a singer, who played the guitar, drum and harmonica and also sang original songs he had composed for this night.

Oh oh, Snow

 Most of you know we don't go where there's snow.  Of course, Ron was raised in Minnesota so he liked snow --when he was young.  But driving in it now? (that's a NO from Joan who was raised in Seattle with hills and slippery snow.) Shoveling it now? (Not so fun.)

   But it is pretty!

It did melt the next day though!

Changing Colors: Old Namakagon Road

The Old Namakagon Road (Joan’s favorite walk) has overhanging trees and some years there are a lot of logging activities along here.  This year not, however.

   We went several times and therefore saw different tree colorings.

September 11 (green!)

October 6 (October 2nd the colors finally came)

October 14 (at 38 degrees) the peak color day.
The 15th, it rained and leaves started falling, gently.

It really wasn’t too bad.  It was 38 degrees out!  Joan had on 2 pairs of pants, 2 socks, 2 shirts, 2 scarves, and 2 jackets. She felt fine. Ron had only an undershirt, a shirt and a jacket (he hadn’t brought any sweaters or sweatshirts — he forgot!) and he was still fine!!!!

 

After 2 miles , he’s pointing to the car and smiling! 

Joan is saying, “Are we there yet?”

Why We are Here is the Fall: Walks in the Northwoods

Our place to come "home" to.  We are in the unit on the right with the US flag.  Surrounded by trees.

We drive for hours in color like this!

You may remember previous year’s photos when we walked in the Northwoods here at Telemark.  We continued that this year. With so many places to choose from in the woods, how do we decide where to go?

     If it’s not raining, we can go anywhere comfortably.  If it’s hot and sunny, we go where there are lots of trees overhanging!  This year, there was so many intermittent rainy days, that if it rained hard for a couple of days, we didn’t want to be under a tree-lined road/path since the trees would drip so.  So we would choose a more open wide road.  If it just started raining, then we would want to be under trees to keep the rain off instead of an open road!

   We also choose a place to park where the first place to walk is a hill so that we would be coming downhill at the end of the walk!

       Here are the walks we took this year, some several times:

  Old Namakagon Road, Rock Lake National Forest (with Camba bicycle and snowshoe) trails, Chipwa Landing Road, Ghost Creek Road, McCloud Lake Road, North Country Trail, Natural Play Area of the Cable Natural History Museum, Forest Road 211B near the Namakagon Dam, Nordmore Road. 

      Joan’s favorite is the Old Namakagon Road, Ron’s the Chipwa Landing Road.

A Wyndham Glacier Canyon Treat

Becky treated us to a 3-day stay with her at Glacier Canyon in Wisconsin Dells as she had an extra 2-bedroom Presidential Suite reserved.  We drove down from Telemark while she drove from her home in Iowa.

        The resort is so HUGE!  We walked and walked.  It was sure a good thing she was there to show us around, we really think we would have been lost for a while otherwise.

       There is everything there possible to do with indoor (and outdoor) water parks and activities.

We were able to stop and see Ron’s Aunt Kay again in Ladysmith on the way back north.
